Can a Fluid Sensor Make Kidney Dialysis Pleasant?

More than 800,000 patients worldwide suffer from chronic renal failure that results in accumulation of toxic substances in the blood and overhydration. Most could not survive for more than 10 to 14 days without adequate treatment. The majority of patients are treated by a process called hemodialysis. Hemodialysis uses external equipment that allows the patient's blood to be pumped through a medical device (dialysis machine) equipped with a hemodialysis membrane-the artificial kidney.

Positive displacement flow meters measure the volume or flow rate of a moving fluid or gas by dividing the media into fixed, metered volumes. These devices consist of a chamber that obstructs the media flow and a rotating or reciprocating mechanism that allows the passage of fixed-volume amounts.
