Paint Reveals Corrosion

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Researchers at Ohio State University are developing an early warning system for aircraft degradation -- paint that changes color when the metal beneath it begins to corrode. While maintenance crews can search for corrosion with several high-tech tools including electromagnetic currents and ultrasound, this paint is potentially both less expensive and more sensitive, because it makes tiny pockets of corrosion visible to the naked eye. The paint reveals newly-formed corrosion cavities as shallow as 15 micrometers -- about one-fifth the width of a human hair. Paint spraying equipment and paint sprayers are used to atomize and propel a concentrated mist of a finish coating onto a surface. This includes the equipment used to directly apply the spray coating, as well as a variety of supporting equipment to optimize the painting process.
