Put the Breaks on Wastewater Emulsions

From Biomin, Inc.

Emulsions in wastewater pose a vexing problem for facilities attempting to recycle water and stay in compliance with permissible discharge limits. But the challenges are no less formidable for routine maintenance. The removal of emulsions, a major constituent of which are fats, oils and greases (FOGs), is necessary to prevent them from depositing on pipes and fouling filtration media.

Not even facilities that use crossflow membranes are exempt from the problems caused by emulsions. While fouling may be eliminated, the concentrate that accumulates during processing remains to be dealt with. The concentrate coats evaporator heating elements, requiring frequent cleanup and disposal. Cost factors weigh in, with charges for hauling water ranging from 15¢ to more than $1 per gallon.

Products & Services
Filtration media is material that actively separates solids from a solution and/or binds select materials in a solution. Search by Specification | Learn more about Filtration Media
Industrial filtration equipment is used to filter, thicken or clarify a mixture of different elements. Search by Specification | Learn more about Industrial Filtration Equipment
Activated carbon is used to remove pollutants from air or water streams, both in the field and in industrial processes such as spill cleanup, groundwater remediation, drinking water filtration, air purification, and the capture of VOCs. Learn more about Activated Carbon
Filtration media and elements are designed to remove suspended particles from a process stream. This product area includes bulk filter media, cartridges, housing-only products, and housing and filter assemblies.  Search by Specification | Learn more about Filtration Media and Elements
Oil and water separators (oil-water separators, oil water separators) are remediation devices that separate oil from water and/or wastewater. This product area includes both aboveground and underground systems for the containment and treatment of oil-contaminated water. Search by Specification | Learn more about Oil and Water Separators
