The application of IR Non Destructive Testing to three thermoplastics (HDPE, PVC & PMMA) and one thermoset composite material (GFRP) is the target of the work. IR Non Destructive Testing is fast, noncontact, safe and is considered as one of the most useful techniques for detection and evaluation of aeronautical plastic material defects. The response of the surface temperature to heating has been used to detect subsurface features of defects by means of the plastic sample cooling sequence. Low thermal diffusivity and effusivity of plastics shows a slow process of heat conduction in samples tested. Logarithmic scale of surface temperature contrast of the samples vs. time is a straight line with a slope ~-0.5 for each pixel within the thermal image located on a free defects area.
