THE AUTO PULL-UP OPTION
Airbus may one day offer its customers an option based on software being developed by Honeywell to take control of an aircraft automatically and steer it away from terrain.
While Airbus officials caution that the Honeywell initiative "is still at an exploratory stage," the aircraft manufacturer could one day offer what it calls an "auto pull-up" system. Airbus notes that controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) remains the most important category of accidents affecting civil aviation despite major improvements such as the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS). But Airbus says it would consult with industry stakeholders before offering an auto pull-up feature.
Even though aircrews are receiving earlier alerts of their proximity to terrain, "there might be cases in which they would not, or could not, react to such warnings," Airbus notes. This is why it's interested in Honeywell's work.
Don Bateman--the leader of what Honeywell calls its "assisted-recovery" system development--also designed EGPWS and is now the chief of technology for the company's commercial electronics business.
Bateman reports there have been no CFIT accidents to date involving EGPWS-equipped airliners. About 30,000 transports are currently so equipped under global mandates, and they have flown more than 200 million flights with the system.
