Airbus is expected to unveil details of new-style assembly procedures for the upcoming A330-200 Freighter at an initial technical coordination meeting set to take place next week in Bremen, Germany. Unlike all previous Airbus freighters, which had their cargo systems installed in Hamburg, the A330-200F system will be completed in Toulouse, France. In addition, Airbus is expected to “pre-stuff” the main deck cargo system in the fuselage barrel sections before final assembly. The changes are believed to be part of the company-wide Power8 cost-saving restructuring plan, as well as a further streamlining of production processes as part of efforts to counter the weak U.S. dollar. A smooth introduction into the production system is considered critical as Airbus gears up for the start of A350XWB development, rapidly increasing A380 deliveries, with an overall production commitment of about 500 airliners in 2008. The main deck cargo system plan builds on the existing procedure for the lower hold cargo-handling system, which has traditionally been pre-installed into barrel sections before final fuselage join on the assembly line. Cargo loading system specialist Ancra International has drawn first blood in the battle to equip the A330-200F. The Hawthorne, Calif.-based company’s system has been selected by launch customer Flyington Freighters. Table of Contents
