From Madison Company

A distributor in Indiana used USR6 short-range ultrasonic sensors on his bulk liquid tanks to gauge the volume of product left in his tank before he needed to call for a delivery to replenish the inventory. Since this application was not in a hazardous area or used for custody transfer, this was an ideal use of the ultrasonic sensor in a simple linear tank level application. The USR6 provided a low-cost solution for continuous level indication. Configured with a 0-5 V output, they were interfaced to a PLC so that each bulk storage tank could be monitored from the office. This prevented stock out situations and added delivery costs as the planned reordering of multiple liquids could now be accomplished.

Level Sensors
Level sensors are used to detect liquid or powder levels, or interfaces between liquids. There are two basic level-measurement types: continuous and point or multi-point.
Liquid Level Switches
Liquid level switches are used to detect specific liquid levels or interfaces between liquids. These level measurements are indicated via an electrical switching action.
Level Switches
Level switches is a generic search term for devices that are used to detect liquid or powder levels, or interfaces between liquids. These level measurements are indicated via an electrical switching action.
Dry Material (Powders) Level Sensors
Dry material (powders) level sensors are used to measure levels of solid, dry materials in either continuous or point values represented with various output options.
Liquid Level Floats
Liquid level floats, sometimes known as float balls, are spherical, cylindrical and similarly-shaped objects - made from either rigid or non-rigid material - that are engineered for buoyancy in water and other liquids. They are used for surface demarcation, level measurement, flow control, cable support, and to block UV light. They may also be designed for integration with valve, switch or fluid-instrument mechanical assemblies, to control or monitor liquid levels and tank volumes.
