The Bush Administration is seriously considering selecting former FAA Deputy Administrator Barbara Barrett to be the next FAA Administrator when Marion Blakey steps down on Sept. 13, industry sources tell The DAILY. Barrett's name had been floating around as a possible candidate, but interest in her has apparently heated up significantly this week. Some sources say a recess appointment was being considered at one point because Democratic lawmakers may balk at the prospect of confirming someone for what would be a five-year term. Before the Barrett speculation surfaced, many industry officials believed current FAA Deputy Administrator Robert Sturgell would face a long spell as acting administrator. Barrett was named deputy administrator during the Reagan Administration, and before that, Reagan selected her for the Civil Aeronautics Board. She has served on the boards of several large companies and public organizations, and has chaired the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy. Barrett also has strong links to Arizona, where she ran for governor as a Republican. She is married to Intel Corp. Chairman Craig Barrett.
