Mexico's Azteca Airlines credits lower airfares as the chief reason for its success, and will add more aircraft and destinations to capitalize on growth in the sector. "The sector is expanding with more participants," CEO Jorge Garrido said, "so we must be aggressive and open new routes. In this context we are looking at international markets, especially the U.S." The carrier will acquire three 136-seat Boeing 737s for $20 million, which will expand the fleet to 12 aircraft. Azteca launched operations in June 2001 with two aircraft flying to two destinations. The carrier recently began operating from Toluca to Chicago via Guadalajara and is awaiting authority from the U.S. to fly from Toluca to Las Vegas. Azteca serves 20 destinations.
