Water is not a particulate contaminant and doesn't significantly affect engine normal performances. But because of the chance of rusting when water stays in contact with steel walls of components during engine stop periods, and because rust when water stays in contact with steel walls of components during engine stop periods, and because rust particles may damage the injection pumps and the injectors, diesel fuel must be kept free of water.
