From Anchor Lamina America, Inc.
All commercially-available In Die Tapping (IDT) designs today utilize some sort of spring-loaded misfeed protection system which is intended to protect the tap and, most importantly, the tapping device itself in the event of a:
* No-hole condition due to a short feed of the material strip
* No-hole condition due to a broken or missing pierce punch
* Undersized hole condition due to a broken or missing extrusion punch
Although misfeed protection systems are included in commercial IDT designs as fail-safe, protective mechanisms - It's still very wise for the end user to employ some method of ensuring a pre-tapped hole is successfully produced on each and every press cycle and precisely fed into position to be tapped.
