The heart of building automation is in the electronics. Building automation covers heating and cooling with input from a thermostat, as well as intelligent lighting control and smart metering. According to a 2008 study, the largest source of commercial energy consumption is space heating at 36%, followed by lighting at 21%, cooling and water heating at 7% each.
