From Ticona Engineering Polymers

The demand for composite materials in aerospace is stronger than ever, due mainly to the
savings in fuel cost for lightweight structures. The vast majority of composites used in aerospace
are thermoset based. Increased usage of continuous reinforced thermoplastic composites for
aerospace are demonstrating that the environmental advantages of thermoplastic vs.. thermoset
are substantial. These advantages include a substantially reduced energy usage for processing,
reduced scrap in processing, reduced waste stream, improved recyclability, and reduced use of
volatile organic compounds. Furthermore, composites based on thermoplastic matrix resins are
recognized for the improved toughness they offer. Due to this inherent advantage, current
developments show promise for designing further weight reduction over conventional materials.
A thin fuselage for a single aisle aircraft made with thermoplastic composite may potentially
offer improved toughness and substantial weight savings as compared to a thermoset counterpart.

Products & Services
Resins and Compounds
Resins and compounds are used for shape fabrication or bond formation. Types include adhesive, casting, and leveling resins; caulk and grout; and sealants and thread lockers.
Monomers, Intermediates, and Base Polymers
Monomers, intermediates, and base polymers are starting raw materials or binders for the production of compounded resins, plastics and elastomers, paints or organic coatings, adhesives and sealants;
Thermoplastics and Thermoplastic Materials
Thermoplastics and thermoplastic materials soften when heated and harden when cooled. They can withstand many heating and cooling cycles and are often suitable for recycling.
Specialty Polymers and Resins
Specialty polymers and resins are proprietary polymers, resins, monomers and intermediates. They include products that are based on proprietary curing technologies or chemistries, or that are designed for specialized applications.
Molding Compounds and Resins
Molding compounds and resins are industrial plastics and polymers that are suitable for forming. They are used in injection molding, compression molding, reaction injection molding (RIM), resin transfer molding (RTM), and blow molding.
