Machinery safety is not a static field. New requirements are constantly being introduced as technology advances, as the legal structures of countries change, and as public expectations evolve over time. The Machinery Directive has been the guiding document for the legal requirements for machinery safety for some time. The directive currently in force has been in existence since 1998. On all three fields (technology, legal environment, and public expectations) there have been many changes over the last decade. Accordingly, the Machinery Directive has been revised. The new edition of the directive, edition 2006/42/EC, becomes effective Dec. 29 of 2009. Some frequently asked questions concerning the new edition of the directive are answered below.
