Addressing RoHS: An Organizational Approach for Manufacturers

From Underwriters Laboratories

For manufacturers, tackling restricted substances directives isn't merely an engineering or legal issue-it's a business issue. The risk associated with producing and distributing non-compliant products can be significant, even crippling, to an organization. Few companies, however, are doing enough to ensure their compliance strategies are on target. As of July 1, 2006, all manufacturers of electronic or electrical equipment put on the market in Europe must comply with the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, which mandates the reduction of six hazardous substances (see "RoHS requirements and repercussions" on page 2 for more details). For many manufacturers, time is running out to develop and implement an effective compliance strategy. The implications of non-compliance are serious and far-reaching, including: * Lost customers * Lost current and future sales * Negative brand impact * Legal liabilities * Increased costs * Market delays
