Video and Media Servers: Technology and Applications, Second Edition

Storage Connectivity

Early implementation of video storage subsystems based themselves on one or more of three RAID technologies. Those that striped the storage array promoted the RAID 3 or RAID 5 rules while others felt a non-parity type protection with full mirroring (RAID 1, total duplication) was the proper choice. As storage grew, improvements in connectivity also developed. RAID in both software and hardware forms expanded - as did multiple controllers and dynamic disk growth capability.

Today, the boundaries of the ever-popular SCSI interface have been extended from a few meters to thousands of meters mainly by providing alternative means for connecting servers to storage devices. The chapter on Network Storage will delve into greater detail on how these new technologies will play an important role in selecting a video server for the facility of tomorrow.
