Appendix D: Hypertext Markup Language

THE COMMON HTML TAGS are described in the following table. For further information on HTML and the related standards, please visit the World Wide Web Consortium's site at www.w3.org.

Tag

Description

Marks the begining and end of an anchor. Anchors are used to implement internal hyperlinks within the current web page, as well as hyperlinks to other web pages elsewhere.

The enclosed text is an address.

Delimits a block quotation.

Delimits the body of the document. The body contains the body text, as well as various tags.


Forces a line break in the text.

Marks text to be centered on the page.

Contains text to be formatted as example source code.

Delimits a group of HTML tags that prompts for and processes user input.

Marks the inclusion of an image, usually a GIF file. Also optionally provides alternate text that can be displayed for the web browser, when the image is not visible.

Processes checkbox input within a form.

Processes file selection input within a form.

Processes hidden text input within a form.

Processes text input within a form.

These tags denote the beginning and the end of a header. The header text can be a section or paragraph header. Six levels of header tags are permitted, with

being the largest and most significant, and
being the smallest and least significant.

Marks the beginning and end of the document headers. The header contains the document header information.
