Spline shafts have either grooves or tongues machined along its length. The mating bearings run along either the groove or tongue, providing high rigidity. There are two main types of spline shafts, those manufactured for plain bearing spline bushings and those machined for ball splines. A spline bushing is a plain bearing with contact grooves that match those in a mating shaft. A ball spline bearing has balls that contact grooves in a matching spline shaft on at least four sides, depending on the number of splines. The balls recirculate as the bearing moves along the guide. Products & Services
Linear guides and rails provide a smooth, precision, guiding surface on which the rolling element of a linear bearing rides.

Ball splines provide nearly friction-free linear motion while simultaneously transmitting torsional loads. The path of the bearing balls is straight, not helical, which allows for a very efficient coupling device suitable for a variety of applications.
