Characterization of Automotion Brake Thermal Conditions by the Use of Infrared Thermography

From Flir Systems Incorporated

This paper shows the main results of the application of infrared thermography to assist in research and quality control at automotive company laboratories. The effect of little differences in the design of the brake is visualized through the use of infrared thermography, because, in the end, it affects the surface temperatures resulting from the small influence on the friction of the brake shoes. Keywords: vehicles, emission tests, brakes, infrared, thermography INTRODUCTION A close collaboration is sustained between different automotive companies established in Spain, such as SEAT-WOLKSWAGEN or RENAULT ESPAÑA and Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, a technical educational institution with more than 30,000 students located in the Mediterranean town of Valencia, on the east coast of Spain. Some successful results of this research collaboration that could be pointed out, among others, are the following important features: The design of the intake and exhaust manifold for some diesel and spark ignition engines manufactured at Spanish factories
