Ever since the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, roof gardens have been part of our culture. They have evolved through the ages from huts to highly sophisticated technical achievements. There are many different types of build-up available in today's marketplace, but essentially, they all conform to the same principles. That is to say, their primary function is to keep the building watertight, but they also provide an attractive finish that can support plant life. This manuscript and our seminar concentrate on the reasons for roof gardens, focus on their design, and conclude with typical problems and how infrared and other techniques can be incorporated to successfully diagnose them.
