Cable Goes Twist-Friendly

From Northwire, Inc.

Cold working and friction heating can turn ordinary wiring into a big maintenance item on equipment that is in near-constant motion. Consider how typical industrial automation equipment works today. Most of it is in use nearly 24/7. It frequently contains robotic elements and assemblies that execute motions repeating hundreds of times or more every minute. No question that these applications put stringent demands on moving parts. This is true even for the cabling that connects moving equipment to controls. This cabling can see millions of flex cycles in the course of normal use.

However, most cable is not designed for this sort of repeated bending, twisting and movement. The problem is that repeated flexing can eventually cold harden conductors to the point of failure. Similarly, the friction generated between various internal components of a moving cable can generate enough heat to compromise the insulation and jacketing over time. The implications of these problems are obvious for maintenance and machinery uptime.

Products & Services
Flat cables are typically used in computers for internal connections to peripherals. They are also referred to as ribbon cables. Search by Specification | Learn more about Flat Cables
The cable assembly may be used for various computer applications like connecting mice, keyboards, printers, modems or other peripheral devices. Search by Specification | Learn more about Computer Cables
Cable assemblies are collections of wires or cables banded into a single unit with connectors on at least one end. Search by Specification | Learn more about Cable Assemblies
Coaxial cables have one conductor insulated with a dielectric material and then surrounded by the other conductor, usually referred to as the center conductor and shield.  Triaxial cables are specialized coaxial cables. Search by Specification | Learn more about Coaxial Cables and Triaxial Cables
Coiled cords and cables consist of a wire wound around a tubular axis. The result is a spring-like form that is able to stretch and bend with minimal stress on the wire. Learn more about Coiled Cords and Cables
