Thermal Images and Spectral Characteristics of Objects that Can Be Used to Aid in Rescue of Shipwrecked People at Sea

From Flir Systems Incorporated

Methods of acquisition, data processing and their interpretation are the main problems in the field of imaging. One of many possibilities for information acquisition is utilization of devices working in the infrared radiation range. It gains special meaning under conditions where there are limitations on visual imaging. Shipwrecked people search on the surface of large reservoirs is a special application of infrared radiation and image information analysis. The basic method of interpretation of the visible image obtained on the output of the infrared camera, is image analysis and subjective situation assessment conducted by the system operator. Due to a number of variables which can affect the image, including type and size of radiation surface, surface temperature and emissivity, temperature and specific proprieties of a background and object surroundings, conducting the analysis and interpretation of image data is very time consuming and difficult. However, the discrimination of a man or a life raft type object on a sea surface, by an experienced operator, in possible in most cases. Projects concerning the optimal usage of devices working in infrared range for sea rescue have been carried out at the Polish Naval Academy.
