Important Condition Monitoring of Switchgear

Process industries in the core sector, such as refineries, depend upon reliable electrical power supplies for their uninterrupted operation. The overheating of switchgear equipment continues to be a factor responsible for the majority of installation failures. Almost all swtichgear standards specify the permissible temperature rise limites while continuously carrying the current as a prime requirement mainly from the point of view of reliable operation of switchgear. However, quite a number of switchgear installations suffer from overheating and burning while they are carrying less tahn the rated current. The detection and timely corrective action may help to prevent more disastrous failures like flashover which have the potential to cause enormous damage in both down and hazard time.
