Dust and Fume Collectors for Blasting Applications

From FARR Air Pollution Control

Wheel blasting generates a very concentrated dust stream compared to room air blasting. The blasting media is usually steel shot. The dust that makes it to the dust collector is a combination of carbon mill scale, steel powder, and rust. The density is several hundred pounds per cubic foot. When cleaning carbon steel, a GS with Hemipleat cartridges can run about 1.5 to 2:1 AC ratio. If the process runs 24 hours a day, then you should be around 1.5:1. We also recommend the abrasive resistant inlet option to extend filter life. When blasting SS, we recommend staying at or below 1.5:1. Consult factory if blasting anything unusual like plastic or specialty alloys. These materials may be flammable and extra precautions are needed. Also, adequate ventilation of the blast chamber is required or overheating can occur quickly. When applying a dust collector on this application, you must make sure the minimum airflow is maintained to keep the air stream under 150 deg. F.

Products & Services
Dust collectors are used in many processes to either recover valuable granular solid or powder from process streams or to remove granular solid pollutants from exhaust gases prior to venting to the atmosphere. Search by Specification | Learn more about Dust Collectors
Downdraft tables are self-contained, portable filtration systems that remove harmful particulates and return filtered air. Search by Specification | Learn more about Downdraft Tables
Cyclone separators and centrifugal separators utilize centrifugal, gravitational, and inertial forces to remove fine particles suspended in air or gas. Search by Specification | Learn more about Cyclone Separators
Baghouses and Depth Filters utilize air flow throw filter media (often in the shape of a bag) to capture particulate matter.  Filter elements with pleated media and other porous materials (ceramics, glass fibers, etc.) are also used.
