Thin Film Resonators and Filters 1

From TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc.

This and the following paper deal with resonators and filters for use in wireless systems. The trend in wireless systems is to push for higher frequencies and wider bandwidths. System architectures are increasingly using digital signal processing which moves DSP towards the higher frequencies. There is always a push for miniaturization and acoustic devices offer fundamental size reductions in wavelength scaled devices. Manufacturing of filters and resonators requires high precision because of the small fractional bandwidths allowed in frequency control devices. To overcome fabrication limits stiffer structures or faster wave propagation modes are used at higher frequency. The first part of these papers will deal with resonators and resonator fundamentals and the second primarily with filters. Manufacturing and packaging issues will also be addressed. The BVD lumped element equivalent circuit model gives an accurate representation of the resonator compared to the 1D results, excepts at harmonics. The BVD model can be extended to include other losses and spurious resonances.

Products & Services
Semiconductor foundry services suppliers design and manufacture semiconductor chips on a contract basis, in prototype to production quantities. Search by Specification | Learn more about Semiconductor Foundry Services
RF frequency multipliers are nonlinear devices that produce an output signal with a frequency that is larger than the frequency of a corresponding input signal by a predetermined factor. Search by Specification | Learn more about RF Frequency Multipliers
Power MOSFETs are majority carrier devices which have high input impedance and do not exhibit minority carrier storage effects, thermal runaway, or secondary breakdown. Power MOSFETs have higher breakdown voltages than bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and can be used in higher frequency applications where switching power losses are important. Junction field-effect transistors (JFET) consist of a semiconductor channel in which the width and the conductivity of the channel is controlled by the space-charge region associated with the p-n region. Search by Specification | Learn more about Junction Field-Effect Transistors (JFET)
SAW filters are electronic filters that are designed and manufactured using surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology. SAW uses piezoelectric transducers that, when excited, produce waves that are used to filter frequencies. Learn more about SAW Filters
