Operating Procedures for Wide Orbital Sanders

In the production of cabinetry, following wide-belt sanding, any rails on sanded panels must be smoothed out. This step is performed using a wide orbital sander. There are right and wrong ways to set up and use a wide orbital sander. Following is a description of the right setup procedures as well as problem solving tips for wide-orbital-sanding operations. Saint-Gobain application engineers are available to help with both. Bear in mind that a wide orbital sander is not a stock removal machine; it requires a P180 to P220 grit finish from the wide belt sander. The proper way to ensure a wide orbital sander is setup and being used correctly is to follow the procedures outlined here. First, lightly pencil the frames of two cabinet doors. Never mark the insert or panel of the door because the insert or panel could flex from sanding pressure or vacuum from the sander could pull the panel or insert down. Next, run both doors through the orbital sander, making sure that one door is on the left side of the conveyor and the other all the way to the right side of the conveyor.
