Severe pitting corrosion is zirconium (UNS No. R60702) reboiler tubes was experienced in hot dilute sulfuric acid. The zirconium 702 tubes had operated with no corrosion for several years. In an effort to mitigate corrosion to austenitic stainless steel by organic acids downstream of the reactor, cupric acetate solution was added to the reactor. This resulted in severe pitting to the zirconium 702. The failure was confirmed to be due to the cupric ions in conjunction with residual levels of chlorides in the system which caused the rapid severe pitting to the zirconium 702. Products & Services
