Thermography is a powerful diagnostic tool for the inspection of residential heating systems. In this paper, IR applications for hot water radiant floor heating systems, (which are quite popular in Germany) will be explored. Thermography easily identifies the regions where the tubes for water supply and return flow are too close together. It is possible to quantitatively and qualitatively study the differences between various techniques of installing the system. Proper installation has an influence on the undulations of the surface temperature, and on the range of temperatures between the supply and return flows and thus, on the flow of heat. Thermography may also be used to analyze the width of the edge zones close to outside walls. Measurement of the average floor temperature also allows one to estimate the efficiency of the system by comparing the computed maximum heating power (from manufacturers' specifications) to the heating power which is actually transferred to the room. In addition to the benefits of heating system optimization and quality control, thermography may also be used for predictive maintenance, to avoid or minimize damage to the system.
