Using IR Thermography for Leak Detection of Underground Hot Water Pipes
From Flir Systems Incorporated

The Matsqui Institution is a medium-security correctional facility in the Pacific Region. The institution is located approximately 70 km out of Vancouver and has a rated capacity of 335 inmates. Part of the facility includes a boiler house on one side, with water lines weaving through several buildings all the way to the other side of the property. The institution was undergoing major construction, which included paving new roads and extensive landscaping when a major hot water leak was suspected. It was found that the Boiler House was loosing approx. 1,000 liters/day of hot, chemically treated water from the system, mostly likely, due to leaking underground pipes. At this stage, a decision had to be made on how to solve this problem. Not only was the construction company ready to pave the road, but also with all the construction going on, the exact location of the underground hot water pipes was difficult to ascertain. To excavate the entire water line, approximately 1.5 km worth, would be extremely costly, time-consuming and most likely result in construction downtime.
