Are Your AC Hipot Leakage Current Measurements Accurate?

From Associated Research, Inc.

The Hipot or Dielectric Withstand test is routinely specified as both a "Type" test and a "Routine Production Line" test on electrical products. This is a voltage test that is designed to stress the insulation of an electrical product far beyond what it will encounter during normal use. The assumption is that if the insulation can "withstand" the much higher voltage for a given time it should be able to function adequately at its normal operating voltage level. The duration of the hipot test usually ranges from 60 seconds for a type test to 1 second for a routine production line test. A basic function of any hipot tester is to monitor excessive leakage current to ground during the test. If excessive leakage current flows it is generally an indication that there may be a defect in the Device Under Test (DUT). Highpots are designed with a circuit that allows the operator to preset a trip level for excessive current conditions.
