One highly effective way to reduce LED manufacturing costs involves switching from wet scrubber exhaust abatement systems to combustion-based abatement technology, explains Mike Czerniak of Edwards. There is a growing movement in the global community to replace the incandescent light bulb with alternative lighting sources such as compact fluorescents and HBLEDs for both operating cost and environmental reasons. LEDs offer many advantages over fluorescents, but to compete successfully in the mass consumer market they will require a significant reduction in the price per lumen. While increasing the volume of LED production will help reduce LED prices, increasing manufacturing efficiency and reducing manufacturing operating costs are equally important factors in achieving competitive market pricing.
