Neglect and stupidity are the parents of every major disaster, writes IJF's Ann-Marie Knegt. In high-risk environments gas detectors are of utmost importance to prevent events escalating from bad to worse.
The accidental release of 40 metric tons of methyl-isocyanate in 1984 at the Union Carbide Plant in Bhopal, India, is definitely one of those cases when the situation went from bad to worse. After 20 years it is still classed as one of the worst industrial disasters in the world. When water was accidentally introduced into the MIC holding tanks, it caused major chemical reactions. The pressure in the tanks grew whilst the chemical “scrubbers”, which should have treated the gas, were off-line for repairs, and then the gas escaped – and catastrophe struck.
