Mobilized computing use in the military has grown at an astounding rate throughout the last few years. As new technology becomes available, higher-performing portable systems provide the soldier with tools that help complete critical missions. One of these new technologies that has advanced development of the communication battlefield is the Embedded Computer Module (ECM). The ECM provides all of the functionality and performance of a slot-card single board computer, but in a smaller COTS form factor package. Whilethe module’s design remains a standard off-the-shelf product, it enables the user to meet specific application needs with an I/O companion board, which the user can tailor to meet the unique requirements of their project.
The Embedded Technology eXtended (ETX) standard has proven itself as the standard for these custom-computing-module designs for mobile platforms. The 100 mm x 114 mm size of the ETX module supports customized baseboard design flexibility, and thus accommodates specific project and space requirements. The concept involves a CPU module that is equipped with the processor, chipset, and other main functions, while a plug-and-play baseboard is created to provide the application-specific I/O features for the computing system.
Products & Services
Industrial chassis and card cages are metal frames that support and contain electronic components and power supplies. They generally have a backplane with slots to install other peripherals and accessories.
Industrial backplanes are circuit boards that contain sockets or expansion slots for connections to other circuit boards. There two types of industrial backplanes: active and passive.
CPU cards and modules are computer boards that contain the central processing unit (CPU) of a computer.
Carrier cards and carrier boards are slotted so that other modules can be plugged into them. Carrier boards may be "slaves" (non-intelligent) or "intelligent."
Digital I/O devices process digital signals (e.g., outputs from a controller) and output the results in digital format.
