In the heart of Los Angeles, near the mega-city’s town hall, a unique and environmentally-friendly office building performs a kind of architectural Tai Chi each day. Serving as the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) new District 7 Headquarters, the striking, $175 million structure houses more than 2,200 California state employees. It is hoped that the building’s impressive architecture will help revitalize the urban landscape of downtown Los Angeles. While an impressive structure in itself, one of the building’s more notable architectural elements is a metallic skin of perforated aluminum panels that provide solar shading and add a special aesthetic to the structure because portions of the exterior walls actually move, changing the appearance of the building throughout the course of the day.
