Surge Voltage Distribution of Form Wound Motor Windings

From Baker Instrument Company, an SKF Group Company

There has been much said about the effectiveness of the surge test that has been taken for granted by our industry. The notion that "all the surge voltage" appears across the first turn is one of those widely accepted concepts, yet there has been little data to support the assertion. Also, as a result of "all the surge voltage" being dropped across the first turn, our industry has accepted the concept that only the first turn of a coil's insulation is really being tested and, therefore, the remainder of the coil has not been tested. The purpose of this study is to measure the actual turn to turn voltage of the windings in actual motors to provide the data to support or refute these two accepted beliefs. (There has been previous work done in this area. See Christiansen and Pedersen.) Before moving on there are some concepts that need to be understood. First, the turn to turn voltage is the voltage which appears across individual loops or turns of copper conductor in the form wound coils.
