Evaluating Avago's HMPP-3860 and HMPP-3890 PIN Switches on the RW053B Demoboard-App Note

Avago Technogies' HMPP-3860 and HMPP-3890 are part of an extensive family of PIN diodes in the ultra-miniature Minipak package. This lead-less package offers reduced parasitics when compared to conventional leaded parts. Additionally, the better thermal conductivity of the Minipak over conventional leaded packages allows higher power to be dissipated safely. The HMPP-3860 is best suited to switching applications where low capacitance at zero bias is the primary consideration, whereas the HMPP-3890 is optimized for switching at low current. The series switch configuration is useable until 3 GHz. Above this frequency limit, better isolation can be achieved through a combination of shunt switching and quarter wavelength transmission line.

PIN diodes are three-layer semiconductor diodes consisting of an intrinsic layer separating heavily doped P and N layers. The charge stored in the intrinsic layer in conjunction with other diode parameters determines the resistance of the diode at RF and microwave frequencies.
