From Kellogg on Biotechnology: Thriving Through Integration
Andrew Ingley, James Pavlik, Ty Smith

OVERVIEW

The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are intensely interested in the structure, function, production, and potential use of proteins as therapies to treat diseases. Much of the success within the biotech industry derives from the development of replicated human proteins to treat diseases that occur when the body makes too little of an important protein or when the presence of unusually large amounts of a protein generate a disease. A sample of approved biologicals is shown in Table 7.1. Many biopharmaceuticals target chronic diseases such as cancer and immune disorders, which typically require relatively large and repeated doses. As a result of the expected increase in high-volume biologic therapeutics on the market, many industry analysts have predicted significant shortages in the supply of biologics manufacturing capacity.

Products & Services
Biotechnology Services
Biotechnology services modify living microorganisms to provide biotechnology products on a contract or custom basis to medical, pharmaceutical, and scientific laboratories.
Water Disinfection Systems
Water disinfection systems treat water to inactivate, destroy, and/or remove pathogenic bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and other parasites. Common methods include chlorination and alternative disinfectants.
Biological Materials
Biological materials are biocompatible materials, natural or man-made, that comprise a whole or a part of a living structure or biomedical device that performs, augments, or replaces a natural function
DNA Synthesizers
DNA synthesizers are used to custom build DNA molecules to contain a sequence of interest.
EMF Meters
EMF meters detect and monitor harmful electric, magnetic or electromagnetic fields surrounding personal or work areas.
