Custom Lifts Help Old Man River Bow to 20th Century Technology

The American Queen, one of only three overnight paddle wheel boats in the United States, has two custom lifts on board. One in the hold, for service, and the other, a 25,000 pound capacity unit that is used to raise and lower the entire command bridge a total of over 12 feet. And, if that wasn't enough, it had to be designed so the pump unit had the capability to also power the mechanism for tilting the two stacks. Floating 105 feet high from the waterline, these functions were necessary so the new paddle wheeler could maintain it's wonderfully nostalgic 19th century look while being able to lower the Pilot house and stacks in order to clear our 20th century bridges. Not only did the designs have to meet with the Delta Queen Steam Boat Company's approval, they had to be approved and meet requirements set by the American Bureau of Shipping and the United States Coast Guard.
