Heavy-Duty Lift Reaches for the Stars

From American Lifts

Hydraulic lift helps millions to get a better look at the stars, planets, solar system and who knows what else one might get a peek at through the new 8.1-meter Gemini telescope. The International Gemini Partnership, consisting of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina and Brazil, has built twin eight-meter telescopes; one which is atop Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, and one on Cerro Pachon, Chile. The 184 million-dollar project will provide the only eight-meter class telescopes available to the entire astronomical communities of the partnership countries. The 14,000 square-foot Base Facility provides office space for 40 astronomers, engineers and support staff, laboratories and a center for remote operation of the telescope using a fiber-optic communication link. The crew requires a lift to move heavy equipment up to the top of the telescope for maintenance and repairs that are performed on a 24-hour cycle. The lift's deck is 16.5 foot square and travels vertically over 7 feet, and is capable of lifting people and equipment weighing up to 10,000 pounds.
