AN3011: Deploying M/A-COM VCOs - Buffering, Mounting and Power Supplies

From M/A-COM

Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs) are essential building blocks for signal generation where fast tuning is required. M/A-COM's line of Aerospace and Defence VCOs deliver excellent tuning linearity and low phase noise: critical parameters when designing Phase Locked Loops (PLL.) To obtain the best performance from M/A-COM VCOs, it is important to use best practice Radio Frequency (RF) design techniques. This application note discusses three important aspects of designing with M/A-COM VCOs: - Output loading: Proper termination of VCO RF outputs to maximise performance. - Mounting: Outline drawings for M/A-COM T08 and SMT-T08 VCOs. Recommended pad layout for SMT-T08 devices. - Power supplies: Minimising power supply noise. To achieve the best performance from M/A-COM VCOs, it is critical that good design practices are used in the layout of the RF circuit. The VCO RF output track, on the circuit, should be designed as a 50 ohm impedance. Line width should be calculated in accordance with the circuit medium dielectric constant and thickness.

Products & Services
RF limiters are circuits that prevent the amplitude of a waveform from exceeding a specified value. There are three basic types of RF limiters: conventional, feedback, and high power. Search by Specification | Learn more about RF Limiters
RF waveguide isolators and RF waveguide circulators permit a signal to pass in one direction while providing high isolation to reflected energy in the reverse direction. RF waveguide circulators are passive devices with three or more ports. Learn more about RF Waveguide Isolators and Circulators
RF frequency converters are integrated component assemblies required for converting microwave signals to lower (or intermediate) or higher frequency range for further processing.   Search by Specification | Learn more about RF Frequency Converters
RF receivers are electronic devices that enable a particular radio signal to be separated from all others being received and converted into a format for video, voice, or data. Search by Specification | Learn more about RF Receivers
Telemetry receivers and telemetry transmitters are data acquisition components used to gather information from remote locations via wireless communication. Search by Specification | Learn more about Telemetry Receivers and Telemetry Transmitters
