Stainless Steel Anodizing and Electropolishing

From METALAST International, Inc.

This technical bulletin briefly discusses stainless steel anodizing and electropolishing. Anodizing is designed to enhance the localized corrosion resistance of stainless steels, while brightness and smoothness are the primary results of electropolishing stainless steels with the side benefit of improving general corrosion resistance. The advantages, disadvantages, and potential applications of the processes are addressed as well. Stainless steels have widespread applications in a variety of areas, from household goods and architectural materials to industrial equipment, as a result of their excellent corrosion resistance to atmospheric environments. However, it has long been recognized that stainless steels are very susceptible to localized corrosion, such as pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, etc., in anion-assisted aggressive environments. It is for this reason that a number of surface treatment technologies have been developed to further improve the localized corrosion resistance as well as the appearance of stainless steels for decorative purposes.
