Manufacturers in process related industries including chemical, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical, share similar pressures faced by all manufacturers today in balancing stakeholders' expectations of growth against the need to respond to increasingly demanding customers. Yet rigid regulations present additional challenges to growth and customer service, along with the increased influence of large customers, the need to work in a multi-channel environment, and increased global competition. Together these challenges converge, requiring tight control over manufacturing, back office and front office processes alike, placing additional requirements on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions. Manufacturers recognize this need in evaluating ERP, but often stop short of reaping the full benefits of the same features that drive their selections. In Aberdeen's July 2007 ERP in manufacturing benchmark, which gathered data from over 1,700 companies, 41% of all respondents were in an industry typically characterized by either process or a hybrid of process and discrete manufacturing - and a further subset (18%) were in the process related industries of chemicals, food and beverage, or pharmaceuticals.
