NTC Thermistor Application Guide

From The Inter-Technical Group, Inc. (ITG)

APPLICATION Temperature measurement The NTC thermistor offers a practical, low-cost solution to most temperature measurement applications. One of the circuits suitable for temperature measurement is a Wheatstone bridge with an NTC thermistor used as one bridge leg. Temperature control The NTC thermistors are the most sensitive of all temperature sensing elements they are popular in temperature control systems. By using a thermistor in a voltage comparator circuit basic on-off temperature control as well as over-temperature protection can be incorporated. Temperature compensation Many semiconductors and ICs exhibit a temperature coefficient and require temperature compensation to produce stable performance over a wide temperature range. Owing to their high positive temperature coefficient, NTC thermistors are particularly suitable for this kind of compensation. Inrush current suppressing Circuits including a capacitor, filament for a bulb, inverter for fluorescent lamp, a heater and etc., induce an inrush current more than 100 times the normal current when the circuit switch is turned on. The NTC thermistors specially developed for this application limit the current at turn-on by their relatively high cold resistance. During continuous operation, the NTC thermistors heats up and its resistance remains negligibly low.

Products & Services
Film capacitors are insulated with polyester, polycarbonate, polypropylene, polystyrene, or other dielectric materials. Search by Specification | Learn more about Film Capacitors
Varistors are voltage-clamping devices that can absorb current without damage. They are typically used in surge protection devices. Search by Specification | Learn more about Varistors
Instrument transformers are used to step-down current or voltage to measurable values. They provide standardized, useable levels of current or voltage in a variety of power monitoring and measurement applications. Search by Specification | Learn more about Instrument Transformers
Ultracapacitors store charges (energy) by physically separating positive and negative charges (unlike batteries which do so chemically).  Very high power densities can be achieved by this method. Search by Specification | Learn more about Ultracapacitors
Gas tube arresters (GTA) or gas discharge tubes (GDT) provide protection against voltage and current surges in electronic and electrical equipment. Search by Specification | Learn more about Gas Tube Arresters (GTA)
