34.1 DESCRIPTION

34.1.1 Mission

The Pure Car Carrier (PCC) is a specially designed vessel for transportation of cars. The first PCC was built in the middle of the 1960s and at time of writing about 300 PCCs are under operation on international voyages.

The arrangement of the PCC is optimized for efficient roll-on/roll-off loading and unloading of cars and for maximizing the number of loaded cars.

The main PCC cargo has been the sedan-type family car. However, high roof type and/or heavy vehicles such as recreation vehicles, trucks, buses and bulldozers have become one of the main cargoes in recent years and the PCTC (Pure Car and Truck Carrier) has become more popular than the PCC.

34.1.2 Unique Features and Capabilities

34.1.2.1 Loading and unloading system

Loading and unloading of a PCC is carried out with roll on/roll off operation. A car drives onboard the vessel and onshore over a main ramp arranged at stern part of the vessel. Additional side ramps near amidships on both port and starboard sides are provided on many PCCs.

34.1.2.2 Multi-deck cargo space

Many decks for cargo space, more than ten decks for large PCC, are arranged under and above the main deck.

Each car deck is designed to accommodate as many cars as possible by optimizing arrangement of inner ramps between adjacent decks, ventilation ducts, stairways and pillars. Some decks are of the portable type, which enables the PCC to accommodate different height of cars...
