Thomas & Howard, a large wholesale grocer based in South Carolina, had a twofold objective when they decided to refine its order picking procedure:
1. Increase the number of pick locations within the existing setup.
2. Find a heavy duty flow track that would provide reliable carton flow for their broad product mix which ranged from light to extremely heavy items, many utilizing rice paper corrugates which were not flowing well on plastic wheel lanes.
Mike Mundy, the Vice President of Operations at Thomas & Howard, turned to UNEX Distributor, BF Company to help find a practical solution. Fred Mercer, President of BF took Mike Mundy of Thomas & Howard to see a recent installation at the Marine Corps Depot in Paris Island, South Carolina which was utilizing a new carton flow track, Span-Track, to improve pick rates.
