Prototyping with Stratasys FDM Takes Just a Few Days And About One-Tenth the Cost
From Stratasys, Inc.

Dana Corporation, a Tier One automotive supplier, assumes responsibility for designing components to meet its customers’ requirements. Validating these designs with prototypes from conventional machining and casting methods required weeks or months and tens of thousands of dollars. The time and expense limited Dana’s use of prototypes.

“By the time a conventional prototype can be made, it’s possible to invest large amounts of time and money in a design that doesn’t work,” says Bruce Vanisacker, designer for Dana’s Rapid Prototyping/CAE Services. Contrasting fused deposition modeling (FDM®) to conventional methods, he says, “FDM enables us to produce accurate and specialized functional rapid prototypes in a
few days. A physical part gives everyone the opportunity to hold and touch and feel the part and determine exactly where we stand.”

Products & Services
Rapid prototyping automates the fabrication of a prototype part from a three-dimensional (3-D) CAD drawing. These physical models convey more complete information about the product earlier in the development cycle.
Rapid prototyping equipment produces a three-dimensional (3D) paper, plastic, wax, ceramic or metal prototype or pattern.
Screw machine shops manufacture screws and other turned or threaded parts from barstock made of various materials.
Tool and die makers manufacture progressive tooling, stamping dies, jigs, fixtures, and other tooling.
Swiss screw machining produces a high quality finish comparable to ground finishing.  This service is used when high-finish close tolerance bearing surfaces are required on small shafts.
