From Supportability Engineering Handbook: Implementation, Measurement, and Management
1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
1.1 Criteria
In addition to applicable federal regulatory standards, all machines shall be designed in accordance with the provisions of the criteria contained herein, and the principles and concepts in the standards identified below. Due to periodic changes in the respective standards, use most current one.
-
National Fire Protection Association: Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery, NFPA 79.
-
National Fire Protection Association: National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.
-
National Fire Protection Association: National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA 72.
-
National Fire Protection Association: Life Safety Code, NFPA 101.
-
National Fire Protection Association: Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13
-
Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.: Standard for Information Technology Equipment, UL-60950. (Note: This standard is to replace Safety of Electrical Business Equipment, UL-1950. See information issued with standards concerning application dates.)
-
Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.: Safety-Related Software, UL-1998.
2 NOISE
When measured with an American National Standards Institute Specifications For Sound Level Meters, ANSI S1.4, Type 1, sound level meter set to A-weighting and slow response, the emitted noise level shall not exceed 80 decibels (dB) for the following conditions:
-
Any equipment operating condition or mode excluding the required audible start-up alarm signals.
-
Measurements shall be taken one (1) foot (30 cm) from the external platform (geometric plane) surface, at a height of five (5) feet (152 cm) from the floor or other walking surface, and circumscribing the machine. Due to different postural or working positions, e.g. sitting in a chair, the height from the floor may be changed to reflect a different expected operator's...
