HANDLING DESCRIPTION: Transferring pairs of cable reels from the staging dock to a flat bed trailer. PROBLEM: The common procedure is to put a lifting bar through the reels' axle hole and lift with a pair of slings on a spreader bar. This requires the operator to lift a heavy steel bar and push it through both reels exposing them to both lifting and twisting injuries. Restrictions: *?Total lift capacity of 8500 pounds *?Largest reel size is 80" diameter by 45" width *?Smallest reel size is 34" diameter by 24" width *?Axle hole maximum diameter of 3" *?Controlled by a single operator *?Tool must weigh 1500 lb. or less *?Easily connect and disconnect from the loading area crane Solution: *?A custom-designed Positech Slide Gripper with an ACME screw drive that self locks to provide safety when the cable reels were gripped. *?Variable frequency drive for slow and fast speeds. *?Gripper safety interlock to prevent release from the cable reels when they were suspended.
