Injection Mold Maker Finds Success with Used EDM

Paul Peltier, president of Preferred Tool, said he never thought he would be able to have high-end EDM equipment in his three-man shop. That was before he became involved with Encore EDM, Mitsubishi's Used EDM division.

Peltier was between a rock and a hard place. His company fabricates plastic injection molds from start to finish for such industries as automotive and appliances. Unfortunately, he did not have any EDM capability.

"We used to try to get around it as much as possible, but what had to be done we outsourced, which cost between $45 and $70 an hour," he explained. "There were weeks I would spend 20 hours transporting parts to another company to EDM."

Having had enough of that, he began searching for an alternative. "I had a limited budget, so I started by checking out some of the used machinery dealers in my area and looking on the Internet at auctions," he said. "I needed a piece of machinery that was in my price range, was accurate and had a tool changer."
