Job Shop Breaks Into Food Industry With EDM

From Mitsubishi EDM/Laser

There's a lot to be said for being in the right place at the right time. And especially with the right equipment, according to ASA Precision Company, Inc. and its President and Owner, Steve Schmidt. Being in the right place at the right time with the Mitsubishi EDM equipment launched ASA Precision into the middle of a revolution in the food industry.

ASA Precision Company, Inc. was founded 40 years ago as a typical job shop, making prototypes and parts for various industries. Today, the $2 million company covers 12,000 sq. ft. and has 22 employees working 1-1/2 shifts five days a week. Among the equipment on the floor are five machining centers, two lathes and two recently purchased Mitsubishi Model FA10 EDM machines.

About three years ago, ASA Precision's direction began to shift. The company's prototype business had grown, and a change in manufacturing methods was needed, Schmidt reports. "We had reached the point where we were outsourcing $25-30,000 worth of EDM work to suppliers, which was fine, but there was usually a 3-4 week turnaround on it. We got to the point where we were relying on subcontractors too much due to customers' demands."
